Q.
What is backflow?
A.
Backflow is the undesirable
reversal of flow of water in a potable drinking water
system. This
event occurs when the supply water pressure is reduced
to sub-atmospheric or the pressure within the system is
greater then supply pressure.
Backflow can bring with it
contaminants from the system that can cause sickness or
death if consumed.
The State of Colorado has mandated to
each water district that they put in place a
“Cross Connection Control Program” that will identify systems that
pose a hazard to the potable drinking water.
Once identified, the consumer is responsible for
installing and maintaining approved backflow prevention.
This usually involves the
installation of a backflow prevention assembly on the
service connection to the building and/or installation
of backflow prevention assemblies on each system make-up
or point of use within the building.
Annual testing of these assemblies is required to
insure that they are working properly.
Enforcement of these requirements is through the
water district or plumbing inspector.
Applicable regulations include The Colorado
Drinking Water Regulations, CRS 25-1-114, and State and
local Plumbing Codes.
TOP
Q. Who requires that backflow prevention assemblies are
tested?
A.
State Regulations have mandated that City Utilities and
Water Districts throughout Colorado must protect
their water distribution systems from possible
contamination by identifying water systems that pose a
potential risk to the potable water quality.
TOP
Q. Do you submit the paperwork to the water districts?
A.
Yes, we take care of submitting the test reports to the
appropriate water districts. The water districts require
that you also keep a copy on file for a minimum of three
(3) years. We also keep a copy of your test report on
file.
Q. How do I choose a Backflow Testing Company?
A.
Ask the following when choosing a
company
How long has the company been
testing backflow assemblies? Is it their primary
business?
BCTR has been testing and repairing backflow
assemblies for almost 20 years.
Does the tester understand water
hydraulics and how it affects your plumbing system?
Waterhammer and
other types of line pressure fluctuation can create
havoc on your backflow assembly and plumbing system.
BCTR has been handling these types of problems for
20 years.
Is the tester friendly,
courteous, helpful, and knowledgeable?
Our staff will help you
through every aspect of the process from beginning
to end.
Is the tester fully insured
with General Liability and Workman’s Compensation
Insurance?
Some companies carry
policies that exclude multi-family or new
construction. Others even exclude the act of
testing. In the end, your protection is only
as good as the insurance that the contractor
carries.
Does the tester carry repair
parts to the job site?
All of our trucks are
stocked with the most common repair parts.
Can the company provide
references?
BCTR can furnish a
partial list of our many satisfied customers upon
request.
Is the accuracy certification
current for the test equipment that is being used?
Our test kits are
evaluated several times each year.
Water districts only require
annual inspection.
Is the tester available for
emergency service 24/7
